　それから、老人はなみはづれた英語の惡詩を謠つてくれたから私は書き留めたが、今寫してみると、頗る首尾一貫しないものである。此の詩を老人達は吟唱曲のやうに繰り返してゐるが、特に韻の不規則な行に來ると、彼等はそれを無理に朗吟風の型にして本當に樂しんでゐるやうであつた。その老人は吟唱しながら身體をくねくねと動かし續けてゐた。それが吟唱にふさはしく、板についてゐるやうであつた。

Then he gave us an extraordinary English doggerel rhyme which I took down, though it seems singularly incoherent when written out at length. These rhymes are repeated by the old men as a sort of chant, and when a line comes that is more than usually irregular they seem to take a real delight in forcing it into the mould of the recitative. All the time he was chanting the old man kept up a kind of snakelike movement in his body, which seemed to fit the chant and make it part of him.

［やぶちゃん注：「惡詩」“doggerel”は「狂詩」のこと。滑稽な内容を旨としたもの。但しこの後に示される「白馬」“THE WHITE HORSE”という詩を見ると、これは所謂、自由形式で民族的や叙事的な内容を表わした古形の朗誦用「狂詩曲」（ラプソディー）であると言ってよい。
「吟唱曲のように」“a sort of chant”。キリスト教の典礼聖歌のような感じの歌い方。同じフレーズを唱和して歌う。
「朗吟風の型」“the mould of the recitative”レシタティーボの型。叙事詩や歌物語の中で叙述や会話の部分に用いられる朗読調の歌唱部分。オペラやオラトリオなどに見られるように、歌い方に一定の類似性や定型がある。］
